Cedar Point

Cedar Point (also known as the roller coaster capital of the world) is a very large amusement park on the shore of Lake Erie in Sandusky, Ohio. The park holds the world’s record for having the most roller coasters, and is also the only amusement park with more than one roller coaster that is taller than 200 feet. Cedar Point was founded in 1870 as a picnic area and living quarters for staff, and is the second oldest amusement park in North America. After the depression, Cedar Point did not fully recover until the 1950s.  George Roose and Emile Legros bought the park to tear it down and make it into a residential area. When the people of the area heard their plans, they wrote to the governor to intervene. With the news of how Disneyland in California was taking off, Roose and Legros decided to make Cedar Point the Disneyland of the Midwest.

Cedar Point holds many of the world’s records for the roller coasters. With the height of 420 feet, Top Thrill Dragster is the second fastest and second tallest roller coaster in the world. In 1969 the Cedar Creek Mine Ride was one of the first steal roller coasters in the world.  The Corkscrew was the first coaster to turn its riders upside down more than one time. The Corkscrew is the second coaster to feature a vertical loop. This record was taken by the Revolution at Six Flags Magic Mountain, only eight days before the Corkscrew opened. The record for the tallest, fastest, and steepest roller coaster in the world in 1978 was taken by the Gemini at Cedar Point.

As of 2008 season, Cedar Point will hold the record for the amusement park with the most rides, featuring 76 different rides.
