Visiting Uganda

If the thought of visiting Uganda seems somewhat daunting, particularly in the light of the recent troubles in Kenya, then you should think again. Since the dark days of Idi Amin, Uganda has rebounded to become a stable country with a thriving economy.  In late 2007 the Commonwealth Heads of Government met in the capital city, Kampala, and the city has blossomed even further as a result.

The main airport is in Entebbe, not far from Kampala. There are regular flights from the USA for as low as $2000 round-trip.  And once you arrive, you will be amazed at the endless range of things to do and the hospitality of the locals.

Entebbe sits on the edge of Lake Victoria, the source of the River Nile, and coming in to land at the airport is quite spectacular. But by far the most exciting and interesting excursion is to take one of the many Gorilla Tours through the tropical rainforest of the Mgahinga National Park.  Experienced guides are always used to keep both visitors and the gorillas safe.

Uganda of course also offers the chance to see lots of other wildlife, and is particularly famous for its wide variety of spectacular birds.  The countryside is lush and tropical, and locals tell you that if you throw a seed on the ground today it will sprout into a plant tomorrow.  Even in bustling Kampala many residents are self-sufficient in fruits and vegetables.

The local food comprises of meat, vegetables and rice and is altogether delicious. Visitors are warned to check the alcohol content of the local beers though, as they are often much more potent than American beer.  Apart from that, everyone is guaranteed to fall in love with this wonderful and friendly country.
