Prince Edward Island is located in Canada and has an area of only 2194.57 square miles. The capital city is Charlotte town with suburbs of Cornwall and Stratford. Another main city is Summerside. The population in early 2008 was estimated at 139,089 for the island. Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in both population and area.
Prince Edward Island has many nicknames such as PEI. The nicknames in other languages are, "the Island of the Prince," "John's Island," "Land Cradled in the Waves," and "Birthplace of the Confederacy." Some islanders jokingly refer to Prince Edward Island's initials as standing for "Pothole Every Inch."
Prince Edward Island National Park is at the shore of the island and contains beaches, sandy dunes, barrier islands, red sandstone cliffs, wetlands, and forests. The park also contains the place where author Lucy Maud Montgomery used the setting for her novel "Anne of Green Gables." The red sandstone that is throughout the island has a high content of iron which, when it hits the air, oxidizes causing the red color.
Spring is a drizzly season. Summer is humid and can last from May until October. Fall on the island is usually only three to four weeks long. Winter starts as flurries in late October and continues until April. The island is stranded from the mainland from December to late April. The temperature drops and the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Straits freeze over. It is hit with severe storms and blizzards. In February, the temperature drops to Fahrenheit -30 for two weeks, and then begins to climb.
