Anyone planning a trip to China must possess a passport that is valid, a Chinese visa and other possible credentials. China does not recognize dual nationality for any Chinese citizen.
If you are going to be in China for an extended period of time and you take prescription medications, it is recommended that you get a complete physical before leaving and make sure you have enough medications to last for the duration of your stay. It is recommended that you use bottled water only or use boiled water. You can also buy carbonated beverages in most hotels. Because of the change in food and culture, if you have a weak stomach, be prepared for things like colds, flu, diarrhea or constipation.
Clothes should be easy to wash, durable and water absorbent. In the summer you should pack light colors and they should be light weight. In the fall and spring, bring sport coats and jeans because the coats are soft and the jeans are thick and flexible. The Chinese currency is not that hard to figure out once you know that 1 dollar is equal to about 7 yuan. For example, one Jiao (one Mao) equals .10 yuan.
Hotels are about half the cost of American hotels and their taxis are very cheap, compared to ours. Items like gold jewelry are reasonably priced but jade is very expensive. It is recommended to always carry the book, "Berlitz Chinese Phrase Book and Dictionary" with you because it is a good reference book. One last note of interest is that tourists should have the name of their hotel with them written in Chinese characters at all times.
