As with traveling in any new country petty theft is a common problem, especially with tourists. Wear a flat money belt that fits under your clothes to help avoid being a victim of theft. Another possible danger is make copies of your passport, identification and travelers checks and place them in your luggage in case you are robbed. Next, don't walk around alone at night, don't wear flashy jewelry, and always check the travel warnings issued by governments so that you have current up to date information on any threats in the area you plan to visit. Africa is a beautiful destination that is sure to be memorable, just be informed and cautious so that the memories are positive.
